Matthew 25:35-40
35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or naked and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the king will answer them, ‘I tell you the truth, just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of mine, you did it for me.’

It’s election time again in the 7,107 islands of the Philippines.

With lots of promises being made by its roster of candidates, the flames of hope are again burning in the hearts of “Pinoys” nationwide. A majority of them coming from the poorest of the poor.

We see it all over the news and in other forms of media. There are a lot of plans, propositions and sensible suggestions being made to help overcome poverty and elevate the lifestyle of all Filipinos. From tax breaks, an intensive labor program, to housing costs to accommodate one’s income level, everyone’s anticipating how the next set of the country’s leaders will be resolving this ongoing crisis.

While most are watching and waiting, millions of Filipinos continue to suffer the poverty phenomenon and are left day in and day out to fend for themselves of the basics – food, shelter and clothing.

Scattered in areas designated by local government units, whether it be “under the bridge” along South Superhighway, beside the uninhabited parts of Manila Bay, along the dumpsters of Payatas, or high up in the segregated hills of San Mateo, Rizal… there one can find a place where the message of faith, hope and love needs to be brought – as soon as possible.

One needs not to wait for the May elections to finish before one takes action. If God has given you talents, time, and treasure, and if you have been a magnanimous recipient of His richest blessings, you can make a difference by sharing what you can to the less fortunate.

There are many avenues to do this, such as the “Asian Christian Music Awards”, which aims to help overcome poverty in the Philippines through the 4 E’s: Education, Employment, Empowerment, and Events. Whatever resources you have right now, whoever you may be, if you have a heart to help, the time is not after the elections – the time is now.

To whom much is given, much is required. Why not dare to be a blessing, make a difference, and be a source of hope today! Help overcome poverty
